Both metal panel ceilings and metal ceiling sails are very popular among builders and architects for designing office spaces due to their acoustic effectiveness and accessibility for service and maintenance purposes. The suppliers of these ceilings demonstrate very impressively the diverse shapes, surface design and colouring that can be achieved today thanks to modern sheet metal processing technology. These ceiling elements can be thermally activated using BEKA capillary tube mats or BEKA serpentine copper tubing very efficiently.

Diverse Shapes and Technical Comparisons are in Demand

These days the shapes and structural designs of metal ceiling panels or ceiling sails are largely determined by the considerable demand for individual solutions. In addition to the wide range of ceiling elements in cost-effective “standard sizes”, there is therefore an increasing need to also thermally activate elaborately produced, bespoke solutions with heat-conducting pipes. Solving this task with regard to cooling and heating performance while simultaneously optimising costs requires that the responsible engineers and ceiling designers carefully weigh up the special properties of available technology.

Metal ceiling panels and ceiling sails can conventionally be thermally activated with both serpentine copper tubing and capillary tube mats.

Heat Transfer – that’s what’s Decisive

The better the heat transfer, the less heat resistance with which a structure can be designed, and the higher the specific cooling and heating capacities that can be expected.

The BEKA serpentine copper tubing sections are bent from copper tubes with 10 mm diameters. The copper tubes cannot be less than 60 mm apart. For improved heat distribution, BEKA serpentine copper tubes are therefore always connected to large-surface heat conducting profiles. BEKA serpentine copper tubes achieve thermal contact with the metal ceiling panels via these heat-conducting profiles. To achieve maximum thermal conduction, BEKA bonds the metal ceiling panels with the heat conducting profiles under pressure and temperature. This provides optimal conditions for achieving high cooling and heating capacities.

BEKA capillary tube mats are produced with 10-mm minimum spacing between capillary tubes. The capillary tube mats, which can be produced in almost any width, activate almost the entire panel surface thanks to the large number of capillary tubes. Capillary tube mats are also expediently pre-bonded into the ceiling panels in BEKA’s factory. Since the capillary tubes only have a wall thickness of 0.5 mm and a large number of capillary tubes are simultaneously distributed on the panel surface, the lower thermal conductivity of plastic compared with copper/aluminium components is hardly disadvantageous in terms of specific cooling and heating capacities.

Both the Material and Shape of Panels Have an Influence on Performance

However, given the diverse range of possible shapes, materials, surface structures and colours for metal ceiling panels and ceiling sails, it is not always easy to make a comparison just based on cooling and heating performance.
