Heating and Cooling Ceiling in Metal Cassette Ceiling Design

Metal cassette ceilings and ceiling sails are a popular choice when planning and designing new office spaces due to their acoustic effectiveness, accessibility for maintenance, and design flexibility. Modern sheet metal processing technology allows for a wide variety of surface structures, shapes, and color systems. With BEKA components, metal cassettes can be turned into heating and cooling elements.

For this purpose, the prefabricated cassettes are fitted with customized capillary tube mats or copper tube meanders at our factory. Thanks to thermal activation in combination with good thermal conductivity, the metal cassettes ensure highly efficient climate control in office spaces without affecting the design of the ceiling. Heating and cooling sails are particularly suitable for achieving high performance values due to the largely unobstructed air circulation.

Thermal activation of special shapes and dimensions

There is a wide range of metal cassettes and ceiling panels available. In addition, individual solutions are often requested to enhance office spaces with attractive ceiling designs. Our components are suitable for both standard tiles and for the thermal activation of special shapes and sizes. We can also equip round shapes and special lengths and widths of metal cassettes with heating and cooling systems for the realization of complex, asymmetrical ceiling plans.

For thermal activation, we can cover metal cassette ceilings with copper pipes or capillary tube mats. Only a project-specific calculation can determine which option is the best solution, taking into account the ceiling height, the required heating and cooling capacities, and the cost specifications. Our technical support team assists planners and architects in their decision-making process.

Why metal cassettes with BEKA components achieve high heating and cooling capacities

The better the heat transfer or the lower the thermal resistance of a structure, the higher the specific heating and cooling capacity will be.

Our copper pipe meanders are bent from 10 mm copper pipes. The distance between pipes can be as little as 60 mm. To optimize heat distribution, the meanders are inserted into large-area heat conduction plates. Then, the heat conduction plates are bonded into the metal cassettes under pressure and at a high temperature to ensure permanent heat contact. This achieves excellent heating and cooling performance and ensures even heat distribution across the entire cassette.

The capillary tube mats for metal cassettes are manufactured with 10 mm spacing between individual capillaries. Due to the large number of capillary tubes, almost the entire cassette surface is effectively and evenly activated. These mats can be produced in widths ranging from 160 to 1,200 mm to fit the dimensions of the cassette. We also glue the capillary tube mat into the cassette. Due to the small spacing between the capillary tubes, no additional metal sheets are needed to improve heat distribution. The thin 0.5 mm wall thickness ensures that the lower thermal conductivity of plastic compared to copper or aluminum constructions hardly affects the heating and cooling capacities achieved.

Ways to improve performance

In addition to the solitary arrangement of metal cassettes as ceiling sails, a perforated surface can also improve air circulation between the room and the ceiling, thereby increasing heating and cooling performance. Perforated ceiling elements also have an acoustic effect, especially when an acoustic fleece is added. If the use of ceiling sails and perforated elements is not an option for design reasons, the convective portion of heat transfer can be increased with additional fresh air supply, e.g., via ceiling swirl diffusers, thereby improving the performance of the heating and cooling ceiling.

We have gained valuable experience with various types of metal cassette ceilings in numerous projects. We are happy to contribute this experience to the planning process for new projects in order to achieve a balance between form and function.
